Baglet

Baglets

This little bag, which I refer to in the diminutive as Baglet, was to play around with the idea of hardware-free openings. It seems like almost all bags are designed to exist in their closed state. I wanted to see if I could make a bag who's resting state was between the opened state with the closed state, to respect both sides of use.

I handmade this bag (above). I molded it all from leather and then hand punched the holes so that I could lace it together with matching leather cord. I wanted to showcase the craft and handiwork of manually making a bag like this, and I think the thick criss-cross does that. The top is a coin-pouch type closure, which I think facilitates the concept pretty well.

Here’s another bag from the same series. This bag was to experiment with proportions and materials on a small scale. It's about the size of a chalk bag.

Again, I wanted to avoid hardware. Fabric can do great things on its own and using hardware sometimes seems like a shortcut to a function rather than having that function be an inherent part of the product.

To keep the bag to be visually comprehensible, I picked materials that are understood at a glance: blue denim, tan leather, white rope with a visible braid, and a cork ball. I chose a quilted fabric for the inside to make it a soft, safe place for gadgets.
